Ade and Bex booked me to cover their wedding at Morland Church with a marquee as a follow up in one of Ades’ parents fields. The setting for this wedding could not have been better and everyone had a ball. The gates were tied in the traditional Cumbrian way at the church too and cost a few quid to cut free. Bakerwood supplied a massive marquee which was placed in a family owned field in Newby, just 5 mins drive from the church so we had lots of time for photographs and to catch people mingling.
This post is very image heavy, but this was a long day with a ton of great images as a result and I wanted to show everyone the great locations available to anyone getting married up this neck of the woods.
The sun shone, birds sang, people smiled and we went to work producing a portfolio of nearly 850 images. I would put the kettle on….
Bex’s dress was supplied by Jacinta Cooper and the team at Kokoa bride in Penrith. Jacinta even came along personally to fit Bex into the dress.
Once we were at the church in Morland, people were starting to come in from all over, so we used this time to capture some of the guests arriving down the church path. There must have been ten people looking out for the bridesmaids arriving!
The Vicar at Morland could not have been any better. Vicars that realise that you have a job to do too and know that you will be as unobtrusive as possible are worth their weight in gold. It falls to the inexperienced photographers in rural churches to turn the milk sour. We on the other hand were as quiet as mice.
Over the road from the church is a garage that is fairly beaten up and weather worn. It was a location from the moment that I clapped eyes on it as the huge green door would look great as a backdrop for a country wedding. Before I finish, the cars were supplied by Cars of Distinction, but not this one below!

The boys (and some of the girls) are massive vw fans, so I made them some Beastie Boys style chains. P.S. RIP: Adam Yauch
Ades’ grandfather had a commemorative bench nearby and it was lovely to photograph the two of them sitting on it and around the pond. That aside, we went to Adrians grandmothers back garden which has some beautiful trees in the old quarry at the back. I was blown away by this location.
Sorry that this post is so long, but we managed to cram in a huge amount in the time that we spent at Adrian and Rebeccas wedding. There are fewer places in Cumbria with as much to photograph as in the Morland area. I have another wedding in Morland church next year and am looking forward to it immensley. Thankyou Adrian and Bex.. All of your images are online now and guess what? You are on the blog!!!!!
Its not often I am in Gretna, but for those who ask, I can sometimes be tempted across the border to put my stamp on a nuptual. It all depends on who is doing the asking! Dave is a graphic designer and art director who had looked hard enough in google to find a gretna wedding that I had completed last year and instantly took to my style of photography as being different to all of the photographers that are online with a Gretna website.
I had some ideas for using some newer techniques and some very very old ones for this wedding and managed to get most of them done including the use of my old Lomo LC-A camera and shooting a large percentage of the wedding with the awesome Fuji x-100 camera. Both of these have a high saturation and high contrast, so obviously I was going for a look.
Sometimes an image can capture a whole range of emotions that someone is feeling at the time. Its easy for photojournalists to capture these kind of images, but harder for studio based and wedding photographers. For some reason though it is becoming easier and when I get an image like the one below, it always makes me feel happy
Its hard enough to shoot on film for most people before you even start to get creative with it. It takes a lot of time and money spent before a film camera can become intuitive to use. If you use something with a bit of passion and a creative eye, you can get some really unique results.
A lot of the photographers in Gretna seem to tow the line as far as standardisation goes. Lots of people want a one stop shop when it comes to the organisation of their day, so it is always refreshing when someone comes along looking for something a little different.
After this we headed back to Smiths Hotel for a few more images of the newlyweds before letting them head in for some food. The sky at this point was clouding in and looked very dramatic, so after some alternative shots in the hotel, we headed up onto the balcony of the suite. Smiths is a great hotel to work in and I wouldn’t mind being there more often. As with most places, you feel as though you have only just scratched the surface when you shoot there and you could always find something new to do.
Sorry this post is a little ‘image heavy’ but we covered so many locations throughout the course of the day that I just had to cram them all in somehow. Tara and Nigel had a very relaxed approach to their photography and their day was suitably relaxed to match. They were married at St Marys Church in Rydal, followed by a quick shoot in the beautiful gardens at Rydal Mount, a racing run down to the jetty at waterhead bay and then back to the Merewood to join the rest of their guests. I also got to go in the beautiful camper from splitscreen dreams along the way. If that is not enough to go at, I caught Sebastian Vettel going out of qualifying in Q2 on the radio in the Chinese Grand Prix, so all in all a successful day.
I will cut into the mass of images with updates as you go further down the page.
After taking a few images of the girls and with 15 or so minutes in hand I decided to drop in on the boys who were getting ready in room 5. There was a little Lakeland ale going on, hip flasks, and a fair ammount of jibing Nigel. Quite a contrast to the girls, but a hoot to photograph all the same.
After leaving the church we headed up to the grounds at Rydal Mount. I had to be careful here as I am familiar with so many images from this location. Going off the beaten track and away from the run of the mill images that other wedding photographers would produce was a must. There are so many images from this location even though we were there only a small amount of time, so I have shown only the ones that I intend to go into the album.
What a day. I could show people more from the Merewood, but this post would go over two pages. Congratulations to Tara and Nigel who have a big job getting through the 500 or so images that have just landed in the gallery space. I hope you enjoy them all.
We are doing more and more wedding stories at the Merewood and having a photographer that produces images that are a little more timeless than other styles seems to be a much more popular choice for people.
I have known Zoe for a few years now and was thrilled to find out that she was getting married. Her and Donalds’ whole day was at the Friars Carse which I have photographed at a few times now and I love the grounds there. When I heard that they were planning to get married by the river, my ears instantly pricked up. I know the place exactly as it is in a break in the massive trees and looks out over a bend in the river, which some mistake for a lake at first as the bend is so severe.
The wedding was in the fluke warm week that we had three weeks ago on a wednesday and I was bowled over to be driving up there in the warm sunshine. The next few days it poured down. I do photograph one or two weddings up in Dumfries in the year, mainly at Easterbrook Hall or Comlongan Castle, so to be going back to Friars Carse was a real treat.
Oliver was chosen as best man and did a great job of winding up Donald all morning and when I arrived we had a great time photographing them getting ready and I loved the pattern on the kilts from Andersons in Dumfries. After the Station Hotel, I shot up to Friars Carse to catch Laura from Blusha Starting on Zoe’s makeup. Laura is an amazing makeup artist and I have a back catalogue of weddings that I have worked on with her and all of the brides look amazing.
Zoe was nice and relaxed when I got there with some nice calming music on and her sisters and parents dotting in and out amongst other well wishers. I love this as it allows me to blend in a little more and I got some great shots in the room.
With it being spring, the shadows were nice and long, so where the marriage was taking place was in the shade, this allowed me to move a bit further away than normal and it pretty much gives me free reign outdoors. Just had to get one or two of Donald before the service started in the awesome snooker room.
This was a wedding all about the details and it was obvious that in preparation for the day, a lot of time had been spent on the little things that tie it all in. Future brides will probably see more than one idea in this next image.
After the meal I took Zoe out and about for a wander around the hotel. There are stacks of locations at Friars Carse but I decided to go to some that I had not seen used before.
I drove down through the Lakes for the start of what was to be a great wedding day for Tessa and Andy. The idea was that I was going to drop in on Andy at Windermere Golf Club for his 8am tee off time in the winter tournament there. It was always the intention that Andy would play a round of golf on the morning of his wedding and with him and the best man finishing at 7 under par, the day had begun with a bang.
Back in Kendal, the girls were getting ready and opening up the presents that Andy had sent through for Tessa. It was a hoot going through everything with Tessa who was as relaxed as I have ever seen on a wedding day. She had some fabulous Vivienne Westwood shoes and a vintage style dress that fitted her like a glove. Many conversations where had about makeup and the location of Antigua…….. Its not in Spain.

It was only on the morning of the wedding that Tessa found out that she was honeymooning in Antigua!
Most of the guests at the wedding came from further afield and most were staying at what is a really unique wedding venue that is styled perfectly for Andy and Tessas semi vintage wedding. They even had an e-type jaguar for the day which all of the men folk were cooing over.

Tessa smiled all day, so it was hard to put the camera down... I took hundreds just of her on her own!
After going back into the church for the groups, everyone left for the reception, which gave me a little more time top do some shots of Andy and Tessa on their own. The church is on the side of a fell looking over into a huge valley that leads down to Morecambe bay. The view was more than a little hazy, so the most we could make out was the outline of the hills in the distance. It still made for some great photographs though.
Had less time than expected with Tessa and Andy before they went in for their meal supplied be the delectable Lucys of Ambleside, but managed to get a stack of images done quickly beforehand.
It felt like the day before that I started photographing this wedding which probably explaines the ammount of images that I had to wade through on the Sunday. I was blown away by how accomodating and friendly everyone was, even after herding people together for a big group shot of all guests. Best of luck in the future both, your album will be amazing….
It feels like things go full circle nowadays. No sooner has the events season finished that the weddings take over with gusto and I am thrust into the world of flowers, love, parties and celebrations. Much better than being a funeral photographer!..
This year we have a heap of weddings to show off on the Lake District blog and also on our facebook pages too so feel free to friend us to keep up with our updates.
I will listen to hundreds of toasts this year, so I thought that getting one of my own in early would maybe create some inspiration for the year to come: Heres to long and nostalgic summer evenings, beautiful brides, laughter, alcohol, amazing weddings, style, passion and creativity……
I have compiled a set of images from 2011 that I consider to be my personal favourites. This may give people who are looking at my site and blog a little more insight into what I am looking for as a photographer. In here there are a mix of set-up images and also some photojournalistic style images and I have put in only one from each wedding that I have attended and there are still more to come from weddings that haven’t even been blogged yet!
I chose this for the amazing setting, the fact that we fought to get to the location in the first place as it is actually at the Cragwood Hotel. After all that, this image really was worth the effort.
I chose this image of Shaun and Rachel from a mountain of images shot on the day because it really does sum them up. The colouring reflects the vintage feel of the wedding too. Rarely am I happier with a posed image than with this one.
Tom & Nicola had two photographers on the day and this was one of my favourites. We jumped back from the church in Grassmere to take this at St Johns in the Vale and is just off the road. We fought a bit of rain to get this shot but it was well worth it.
This is by far my favourite of Andrew and Jill and I think it is theirs too. The depth and height of the trees adds a real perspective to it and by muting the colours is is far less green than the original. Armathwaite hall has so many locations for all types of weather conditions and it is a real treat to photograph weddings there.
Some brides and grooms are up for anything.. Andrew and Kelly were no exception as they jumped at the chance to have images in the IMAX at Rheged. The screen wasn’t actually on and the light is coming from a flash positioned on a boom in front of the screen. Certainly one of the most unique shots from their wedding and a personal favourite. The rest of their images will follow in a blog post shortly.
I know that this is quite an odd choice for a favourite, but in a fraction of a second this moment was gone and this was the only time I could get a clean shot as everybody piled onto the dance floor. All of the elements that were required to take it came together for a 60th of a second. A firm firm favourite from this year.
This is again, just another moment. I will even admit that this image was not part of Hamish and Lucies’ final selection for their album, but it is one that really makes me smile. Maybe you had to be there to feel the nerves and excitement to appreciate this quiet moment, shot from the hallway. The room was bathed in beautiful sunlight and apart from a little colour correction, this image is largely untouched in photoshop.
Joanne said that she wanted something different as a portrait of herself to run alongside the more posed images of her from her wedding day. I love it because this window has been used a thousand times by nearly every photographer covering weddings in Cumbria and after a moment to think, I decided on a partial silhouette. Its a first from me and maybe a first for the Greenhill?
Victoria was luminous on her wedding day and photographed with ease from start to finish. This image stood out mainly because of how it flows from top to bottom and really shows off the vibrancy of her dress, even in mono.
As far as classic wedding imagery goes, this is it for me and I really could create images like this one all day long. This wedding was shot as part of our two photographer team at Icon Wedding Photography, where you get the option to have two full time professional photographers covering your wedding day. Abbey house is a beautiful venue and one of my favourites in south Lakeland too. There is so much to see there and its potential for great wedding images is huge. We were even shooting once it got dark which I will show you all in a later post.
Matt was getting a real roasting here from his best man, who’s wedding I also covered. Its not a traditional wedding picture and Adel isn’t even in it, but for me this image sums up these two to a tee. For more of Matt and Adels’ images search the blog as there are heaps on the blog. Armathwaite hall delivered us a lovely low sunset in their fantastic grounds.
Talk about smiling from start to finish and there was no telling them both to be natural either… They just did it. Inn on the lake is rapidly becoming my home venue as year on year my weddings there increase. Its no bad thing as it is without doubt one of the best hotels for photography in the lakes. This image is an alternative to the normal stand at the end of the jetty and have a snog or look longingly at each-other pictures… I tend to have an alternative for every stayed or overdone picture. Jonathan and Gary are some of the best planners around too and make every wedding run like a well oiled machine.
This shot of Melissa getting ready opens up Melissa and Lees’ album and spreads 24 inches across the page. Its a real knockout image taken on my Yashicamat 66 and is as smooth close up as it is from afar. I could have chose from hundreds of images of this wedding but I just love the expression on Mels face and the fact that she is in her dress and no-one else is ready. Carlisle racecourse is a fantastic place for a wedding and as an alternative venue to big country piles it makes for a very different setting and a very different style of photography.
Nick and Maggie seem to pop up on this blog a lot after having their wedding and pre wedding photoshoot done by Lake District. This image is timeless and has one of the most picturesque churches in the Lake District as the backdrop. Without doubt one of my favourites this year. Graysonside, Nicks family home is also now a wedding venue, so if you are looking at this and don’t have a venue yet, have a look at their site by clicking here.
Just over the road from the above venue at Graysonside is Hundith Hill, the chosen location of Stacey and Stephen. The rain really didn’t stop on the day, so I shot some bits inside while we waited for the weather to subside. The wall frames Stacey in this shot and makes the image really pop out. Staceys’ looks are flawless and make for a perfect bride who thankfully quite enjoyed being photographed.
Just remembering that I have to choose one image from each wedding for this exercise, this is Rachels’ favourite image and its mine too. The light is quite flat as we were in the shade but the dying embers of the evening summer sun can be seen lighting the staircase inside. The Greenhill Hotel, is where I shot my first big wedding after moving back from the North East, so is kind of a special place for me and I like to think that this is a nice portrait of the hotel too.
Caught this as we were setting up for a shot on the balcony outside Rachel and Ricks suite at Smiths. Its safe to say that this one had preference over the setup image by quite a long way.
Another wedding that is yet unblogged but expect to see it in the future. Sarah and peter had the worst mother nature could throw at us and still smiled all the way through. I stepped in a puddle but still managed to deliver over 400 images of a fantastic day for them both.
This has to be a wedding photograph that will live in infamy for me and one that I have clients ask about all of the time. This version is untreated with the union Jack left in. See the blog for more images from their beautiful wedding at Inn on the Lake.
So 2011 ends where it all started, at the Grange with Victor and Jennifer. This was a wedding that I felt really at home with. Vintage styling and a really lovely couple who have left me some very nice comments on their blog post. This shot was captured as they walked away from their wedding breakfast and really was a lucky shot. I love it..
Unfortunately I have no control over the weather or every wedding day would be a nice patchy, sunny day with a nice sunset at the end of it. Abigail and David don’t have the ability to control the weather either or they would have probably gone for the same kind of day that I would have wanted, but rain it did…… lots. I had my assistant Emma Stoszkowski with me to assist who is fast becoming a great photographer in her own right just after finishing her photography degree with a 2.1 (congratulations!) and she also came up with a stack of images from what was an emotional and stylish wedding day.
The clouds parted for the most important parts of the day, which is all that mattered, as there was a boat trip on windermere with Windermere Lake Cruises and a short trip off the beaten track to a fantastic boat house on the shores of the lake. The Merewood is a fantastic location for a wedding in Lakeland and is helped along by its proximity to Windermere on one side and Ambleside on the other. I shoot maybe three weddings a year there, and always look forward to going back as the inside (should it rain) is equally as nice as the outside.
So, on the day, Abigails awesome lace topped dress was made by Lyn Ashworth and the cars were provided by Touch of Classin Workington. Enjoy the pictures and my apologies for them being a little extensive. I liked lots.
Lets get one thing straight, shooting weddings overseas is a huge honor and privilege to do and Russ and Jill were no exception. The Sensatori in Crete is a fantastic hotel with loads of bits and bobs around it like beaches, cafes and little chapels too. Russ and Jill knew what they wanted from their photography and not taking up too much time on the day, I photographed them in as many places as I could before pulling away to let them enjoy the day. Maybe I should change my name to “Lake District Wedding Photography International”? Nah, anyway here is a wedding for a lovely couple that was a pleasure to shoot on one of the most beautiful and scenic islands in the whole of the medditeranian sea.
I have left some stuff out as the images of Jill and Russ will take up most of my available space. I can’t say enough how happy I am with how the images turned out and even though I generally travel armed to the teeth with cameras when I go overseas I only used one digital and one two and a quarter square film camera.
Jills hair was a really striking dark red on the day which contrasted really well with the dusty pink of her dress. Photographing her in the chapel was awesome and in the hotel grounds, she contrasted really well with the surroundings.

Sometimes the simplest images are the ones that stand out to me. Shot on the Yashica 66 film camera and Ilford film.
Thanks again for everything both and I loved photographing you in one of the most amazing and beautiful places I have ever been to.
Mike and Dawn booked me in January to cover their wedding at Inn on the Lake and on the day, there was so much to photograph my shot count on the cameras reached 1700 images…. I never shoot that much. Not even on commercial jobs that can last days, but the truth is that there was a lot to photograph, the light was awesome and the lake cruise on the evening topped off an excellent days photography. I will get straight into the images:
I shot so many images on the morning that they would not all go into this blog. Unusually for me, I didn’t stay the whole time, but kept dipping in and out of the room. This meant that there was always something new when I went back in. Dawn had a lot of bridesmaids so the room was busy enough without me there. I may publish some of these images at a later date as they tell a story all in themselves.
Mike and Dawn had arranged to have their wedding in the huge gazebo, used at Inn on the Lake when guest numbers are very high. The styling of the wedding reception was fantastic and really complimented the rest of the day. After the meal the sides were lifted off at one end and it felt like a bedouin tent. This opened the interior to the outside views of Place Fell (on the other side of the lake) and Kirkstone to he right. Very beautiful locations all with perfect weather.
I loved the wedding cake and its like no other that I have seen all year. I can’t remember the flavour but I think that it might have been chocolate.
After the meal everyone headed down to the Ullswater Steamers pier to go on a lake cruise. I love love love wedding cruises. They give me the opportunity to photograph people in a different light and maybe a little bit more relaxed than at the meal with speeches impending etc… The next few images are all from the boat trip where even in a smaller space, I feel that I can blend in more.

Dawn looked stunning on every image. The weather held out just long enough to get back to the pier and disembark.
Thank-you Dawn and Mike and I hope you can choose between the images. There are quite a lot.
