If I could photograph at any venue outside of the Lake District in Cumbria, Gilsland Spa has to be in the top five, maybe even the top two? As locations go, this is a venue with tonnage. Stacks of lounges for wet wedding days, huge winding staircases, great and tastefully decorated rooms and a really beautiful orangery, which is the new hotspot for weddings out Brampton way. There is also a chequer board floor conservatory which can be used by day for ceremonies and by night for dancing. It has it all…. No it really does.
Nearby are some small and intimate paths, tucked away where nobody can see, accessible mainly on dry days but a swish location for couples shots. There is also the view from the bowling green, looking out over Gilsland, up to the Northern Pennines, Alston and Nent. There are some older buildings nearby too which have amazing flaking walls and some brilliant textures that are a real draw for photographers.
Out of every venue on this site, on a hot day, Gilsland Spa really comes to life. Bright sunshine with loads of patchy cover from the trees and a wealth of photographic opportunity.
